I was born in 1983. When I was seven years old I remember sounding out the theme to Dennis the Menace on the piano. On my tenth birthday somebody gave me a cassette tape of the Back to the Future soundtrack. As I watched The Simpsons and Star Trek: The Next Generation on TV, every episode was bookended by wonderful themes. I had such a visceral reaction to the music in the stuff I watched that it became the very reason why I watched what I watched. The name of the composer on a series or movie often dictated whether or not I watched it.
My family didn't have a CD player at the time and I didn't know there was such a thing as scores -- the only way I could hear the music I liked was to watch the movie over and over. This interest in music led to me taking piano lessons from age 7 through 14. Traditional music (Bach, Bartok, etc) was forced upon me and I was very unhappy -- it didn't hook me the same way that film music did. When George Lucas re-released his Star Wars trilogy in theaters around 1997 and subsequently released The Phantom Menace in the spring of 1999, I was shoved in a new direction. From the moment I heard "Duel of the Fates" by John Williams, I wanted to write film music. It was in my genes. It was my destiny. My piano teacher started to give me composition lessons but I quickly became angry that he would not approve of me writing the things I loved. I broke ties with him and taught myself to write by listening to everything I could possibly get my hands on.
Ever since then I've been absorbing all the music I can and writing all that I can (provided I get enough time away from my day job). I have way too many influences to list completely, but let's just say that Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, and John Williams weigh heavily on my compositional style.
Over the past couple of years my output has been greatly reduced because of my preoccupation with earning a paycheck. At the moment I'm a software engineer for Cerner corporation, but at night or whenever I get a spare moment I'm still writing music. Please check out the "Music" page and have a listen. I really recommend "Rose", "Pool Gazing", "Dryer Demons", "Pastel Robots" and "Return of the Ghostbusters".
